MY JOURNEY

A Life of Service, Sport & Leadership

EVERYONE HAS A STORY
HERE IS MINE:

From a young age, I believed that discipline, education, and service could transform lives. My journey has been guided by that conviction. Armed with a strong academic foundation—earning a Ph.D. in Physical Education, qualifying the UGC-NET for Lectureship, and dedicating my life to sports science and youth development—I chose a path of purpose over comfort.

As the Director of Sports at Ethiraj College for Women, I have spent years shaping young women into confident leaders, national champions, and global achievers. Under my guidance, hundreds of students have represented universities, states, and the nation in prestigious tournaments, bringing laurels to Tamil Nadu and India. My mission has always been clear: empower youth through sports, discipline, and character-building.

My commitment to nation-building led me into public life with the Bharatiya Janata Party. As the BJP MLA Candidate for Coonoor Constituency in 2016, and as a State Executive Member in the Education Wing of BJP Tamil Nadu, I have worked tirelessly to strengthen educational reforms, youth leadership, and policy development. I had the privilege of contributing to the party’s election manifesto and actively participating in national and state election campaigns, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Beyond academics and politics, my heart belongs to social service. As the Founder and Managing Trustee of RISE, I have initiated rural upliftment programs, women empowerment initiatives, sports promotion for underprivileged youth, flood relief efforts in Chennai, Nepal relief activities, and continuous support for orphanages, elderly homes, and differently-abled children. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led large-scale Yoga and mental wellness programs that benefited thousands of students and families.

I have always believed that true leadership means standing beside the vulnerable. From advocating for the restoration of Scheduled Tribe status for the Badaga community in The Nilgiris, to supporting women legally, financially, and emotionally during times of crisis, my public life has been rooted in compassion and action.

Sports remains my lifelong passion. As a former national-level basketball player and a recipient of multiple awards for excellence in sports and service, I have consistently worked to promote “Fit India” ideals long before fitness became a national movement. I strongly believe that sports must be made compulsory in schools and colleges to build a stronger, healthier India.

My vision for the future is bold yet simple:

  • Empower 500 young professionals from an early age through structured mentorship.
  • Integrate sports, education, and employability.
  • Promote rural development and sustainable environmental practices.
  • Establish forums that ensure women’s dignity, youth opportunity, and social harmony.
  • Build a spiritually strong and physically fit India.

This journey has never been about personal recognition. It has been about creating opportunities, building institutions, and inspiring generations.

I invite you to join me in this mission of service, strength, and transformation.

Together, we can build a stronger Tamil Nadu. Together, we can build a greater India.

JAI HIND.

01

FIT INDIA
Coining

In 2017, Dr. C. Uma Devi coined the visionary term "FIT INDIA" — a national call to action for health, fitness, and sporting culture across every citizen of India.

She personally presented the "Young India – FIT INDIA" blueprint to the Hon. Sports Minister, outlining a comprehensive framework for integrating physical fitness into schools, colleges, and public life.

This idea was later adopted as a nationwide movement by the Government of India, a testament to the power of one educator's foresight and determination.

Best Teacher
Award

Dr. Uma Devi was honoured with the prestigious Best Teacher Award by Krishna Sweets for two consecutive years, 2010 and 2012 — a recognition of her exceptional dedication to student growth and campus sporting culture.

More than an award, it was the collective voice of hundreds of students who witnessed her transform coaching from a discipline into an inspiration. She didn't just teach — she built confidence, character, and champions.

Her classrooms were courts, her lectures were lived examples, and her students went on to represent Tamil Nadu and India on the national stage.

Best Service
in Sports

Recognized by the Rajasthan Association on International Women's Day, this award acknowledged Dr. Uma Devi's extraordinary contribution to women's sports development across Tamil Nadu.

Through relentless advocacy, coaching, and institutional building, she created pathways for women athletes who had no access to organized training, facilities, or representation at national competitions.

Her work stands as proof that true service in sports goes beyond medals — it is about transforming lives through movement, discipline, and opportunity.
